Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection

The Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection (ARHAI) was established in April 2007.

The terms of reference are:
  • to provide practical and scientific advice to the Government on strategies to minimise the incidence of healthcare associated infections and to maintain the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents in the treatment and prevention of microbial infections in man and animals. In making recommendations, the committee will take into account the relevant work of other expert groups in the human and veterinary fields.
The remit of the committee will be to advise the Government on:
  • Current and emerging problems / trends in healthcare associated infections, antimicrobial resistance and prescribing so that these may be addressed in a timely fashion.
  • Surveillance needs and priorities in key areas of healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance and prescribing in the UK and as part of wider international networks.
  • Long-term measures necessary to minimise the incidence of healthcare associated infections, antimicrobial resistance and infections associated with antimicrobial use.
  • Key priority areas within the fields of healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance and prescribing practice that require further research.
