The Appointments Commission has appointed Professor
William Irving as the new chair of the Advisory Group on Hepatitis (AGH) with
effect from 1 January 2009.Professor Irving is Professor and Honorary Consultant
in Virology at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. He has been a member
of the AGH since 1998 and is also a member of the Advisory Committee on Dangerous
Pathogens (ACDP). Professor Irving has replaced Professor Howard Thomas, Head
of Department of Medicine at Imperial College School of Medicine, London and
consultant hepatologist at St Mary's Hospital, London, who chaired the AGH
from November 1999. Professor Irving's appointment is for three years. There
is no remuneration made, although expenses are claimed in line with the AGH code
of practice. All appointments are made on merit and political activity
plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original
Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity
(if any declared) to be made public. For this appointment, no political activity
was declared. This appointment has been made in accordance with the Office
of the Commissioner for Public Appointments (OCPA) Code of Practice.
