Dr. Jose Evenor Taboada, Honorary British Consul in Managua

The British Embassy in Costa Rica has overall responsability for Nicaragua since the British Embassy was closed in Managua in 2004.  Relations between the UK and Nicaragua go back over three hundred years and the two countries have particularly strong cultural ties in Nicaragua's Caribbean coast region.

The British Ambassador and other Embassy staff make regular trips to Nicaragua to maintain close links between the two countries.

Development work

The Office of the Department for International Development - DFID closed its Managua office in April 2009 but has committed to maintaining its programmes in Nicaragua for the amount of £ 4 million a year until 2011.

The Nicaragua programme will be managed from the DFID Caribbean Office in Barbados and will be delivered through partnerships with the World Bank and other development partners.

Nicaragua has been reclassified as a middle income country and as of April 2009 no longer receives direct budget support from the UK.

For more information, please visit the (DFID) website.

The British Embassy supports small projects in Nicaragua with a particular focus on the Caribbean Coast region where it has been undertaking a Prison Reform Campaign to improve conditions for juvenile and women prisoners.

A website has been created to draw attention to this issue and to help raise funds to help the prisoners. Bruce Callow organised to raise some money.
