Excellent Teacher Scheme

This information and guidance about the Excellent Teacher Scheme (ETS) may be useful to:

  • teachers considering applying for an Excellent Teacher (ET) post
  • headteachers and governors thinking about creating an ET post and interested in the potential benefits for their school.

ETs will have a distinctive role in helping other teachers improve their effectiveness and will have a major impact on improving pupil attainment across the whole school. Schools can create ET posts at any time.

A teacher who has not already met the ET standards is restricted to applying for ET posts in their own school. They must submit a completed ET application form to their headteacher.

The proposal for the ETS came about as a result of the January 2004 Agreement between the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Employers Organisation and ATL, NAHT, NASUWT, PAT and SHA.

News

In its 17th report, the School Teachers Review Body recommended that an ETS salary range of £37,672 to £48,437 in bands B to D (extending to £53,819 in band A) should apply from September 2008. Subject to the outcome of the consultation on his response to the report, the Secretary of State proposes to accept the recommendation. The report can be downloaded from the Latest Pay and Conditions page.
