BIS's Construction Market Intelligence Unit has responsibility for the
collection, analysis and publication of statistics for the construction sector.
The Division provides advice and regular statistical analysis of building
materials; overseas trade, overseas construction by British firms, price and
cost indices and key performance indicators of construction activity.
Monthly Statistics of Building Materials
and Components
BIS recently undertook a review of building material statistics. The review
examined the current methodologies used to compile the data, ascertained user
needs, assessed whether the statistics in their present form continue to meet
user needs, and identified options for change.

This is the Final Report on the Review of BIS building material statistics
undertaken in 2010. It replaces a Draft Final report of 2010. Some minor
revisions have been made in the Final Report but these do not materially affect
the report content nor the conclusions and recommendations
Following up to the review, BIS commissioned a building material statistics
development project, and a report on the development project is available
here.
The Branch calculates and publishes tender price indices, output price
indices and resource cost indices. Further information is available

BIS manages contracts for the collection and publication of construction
Price and Cost Indices and construction Key Performance Indicators. We
recently commissioned two reviews which examined the current arrangements
for these data collections and recommended ways forward for future

Review of BERR/BIS
Construction Price and Cost Indices, by Davis Langdon Management Consulting
This is the Final Report of the Review of BERR Construction Price and Cost
Indices undertaken in 2008 by Davis Langdon. It replaces Davis Langdon's
Draft Final report of August 2008. Some revisions have been made in the
Final Report but these do not materially affect the report content nor the
conclusions and recommendations"
Change in responsibility for the production of Monthly New Orders
and Quarterly Output and Employment construction statistics
From 1 March 2008 the Office for National Statistics has taken
responsibility for the production of Monthly New Order and Quarterly
Output statistics.
The first publication produced by ONS for Quarterly Output and
Employment statistics will be on Friday 7 March 2008 from the following

Construction Statistics Annual
The unit also contributes to the Construction Statistics Annual, produced by the Office of National Statistics. This publication gives a broad perspective of statistical trends in the construction industry in Great Britain through the last decade together with some international comparisons and features on leading initiatives that may influence the future.
