BMATT (CZ) In-Country Training Team (ICTT) Deployment - Ukraine 2010

BMATT (CZ) deployed a 4-man In Country Training Team (ICTT) to Novograd Volinskiy Training Area, to deliver a 3 week Peace Support Operations (PSO) skills and leadership cadre. The Ukraine Armed Forces (UAF) were conducting Pre-Deployment Training (PDT) for operational deployments to Kosovo.

The aim was to deploy an ICTT to Ukraine to deliver a PSO skills and leadership cadre to soldiers from 30 Mechanised Brigade, rank ranged from Private to Senior Lieutenant, in order to enhance their training for forthcoming Peace Support Operations with the underpinning idea to teach the students from 30 Mech Bde the current British Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) and practice their skills. With these skills the students would have the ability, if employed correctly, to provide effective PDT to the Bde and the units due to deploy to Kosovo.

Overall the training was conducted in a measured and progressive style with an emphasis on command. All instruction was pitched at an appropriate level, with instructors underlining wider implications of PSO actions and the importance of gaining and maintaining the trust of civilian populations. The students learned new skills ranging from, patrolling, vehicle checkpoint skills, observation posts and how to conduct patrols when living in the field.

The BMATT team were allocated 3 Liaison Officers who also acted as interpreters. They gained valuable experience and training alongside the BMATT instructors and they also received good insight to all contents of the course.

BMATT (CZ) In-Country Training Team (ICTT) Deployment - Romania 2010

BMATT (CZ) deployed a 4-man In Country Training Team (ICTT) to 'Calguerni' Barracks, Bucharest, Romania between 30 October - 26 November 2010. The task was to conduct a 4-week in barracks Pre Deployment Training (PDT) Course.

The aim was to instruct, assist and advise Platoon and Squad Commanders from the 2 INF and 495 INF Bn's from Romanian Land Forces (ROU LF) on Pre Deployment Training (PDT) in order to further develop their low-level tactics, awareness and capabilities.

The ROU LF and in particular 1 Mechanised Brigade who have been 'earmarked' for operations, aspire to enhance the professionalism and capabilities of their low level commanders and to be in a position to cascade the training down to their own soldiers. Currently Romanian soldiers are involved in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. The students wanted to learn more of the British tactics and techniques involved to improve their operational understanding when employed in multinational environments. The methods employed by BMATT (CZ), which included a British Army style Commander's Cadre package met the ROU LF requirements.

The ROU LF selected 40 students from a broad range of experience from fairly senior NCO's, through to some young Officer's. 2nd and 495th Infantry Battalions selected 20 students each who were all platoon and squad leaders. Most were very well motivated and a few had operational experience of Iraq and/or Afghanistan.

BMATT (CZ) In-Country Training Team (ICTT) Deployment - Georgia 2010

BMATT (CZ) deployed a 5-man In Country Training Team (ICTT) to Krtsanisi Training Area (KTA), Georgia to provide a 4 week Instructor Training Course (ITC). The Georgian Armed Forces (GAF) are currently conducting Pre-deployment Training (PDT) for operational deployments to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, working alongside the United States Marine Corps (USMC). BMATT (CZ) was therefore requested to provide instructor training to assist with this process as USMC involvement in PDT gradually decreases.

The aim was to assist, teach, coach and mentor in a bespoke ITC tailored to the GAF, incorporating low level Peace Support Operations (PSO) tactics techniques and procedures (TTPs). The aim was achieved and 30 Georgian personnel from the GAF, rank ranged from Master Sergeant to Corporal, were trained in Instructional Techniques and basic PSO TTPs.

The team was also able to liaise closely with the Commander of the US Marine Corps, Training and Advisory Team (MCTAG) at KTA. This was necessary for two reasons; firstly in order to ensure that the training delivered would not be contradictory to their objectives and secondly to exchange information and organise future BMATT (CZ) involvement alongside the MCTAG in the near future.

BMATT (CZ) In-Country Training Team (ICTT) Deployment - Kosovo 2010

BMATT (CZ) deployed a 4 man ICTT to Ferizaj Training and Doctrine Centre, near Pristina, Kosovo over the period 24 February - 26 March 2010 to conduct a 4 week Junior Commanders Cadre.

The aim was to teach, coach and mentor 30 students selected from the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) in the British approach to Command and Leadership and in the fundamental skills of such.  Peace Support Operations skills were also used as a vehicle for the command and leadership training. This training formed part of the overall programme to develop the KSF towards what is known as 'Full Operating Capability' (FOC). The team was also able to identify potential Instructors amongst the students.

The team was also able to observe and advise on current procedures that were in place at Ferizaj such as efficient armoury routines and robust casualty procedures. Advice was also given on designing and delivering training, disciplinary action on courses and course-reporting methods to assist in merit based promotion.

BMATT (CZ) In-Country Training Team (ICTT) Deployment - Morocco January 2010

BMATT (CZ) deployed a 4-man In Country Training Team (ICTT) to Maamora Barracks, Sale, Rabat, Morocco between 11 January – 05 February 2010.  The task was to conduct a 4-week Peace Support Instructor Training Course.

The aim was to instruct, assist and advise young Officers from the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (RMAF) on Peace Support Operations (PSO) in order to further develop the RMAF Peace Support capabilities.

The RMAF and in particular 1 Brigade d'Infantere Parachutiste (1 BIP) aspire to open a Peace Support Training centre in the North of Morocco. Currently Moroccan soldiers are involved in PSO around the world, mainly in the Ivory Coast, Kosovo and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The students wanted to learn more of the British tactics and techniques involved in PSO to improve their operational understanding when employed in multinational environments. All theory and classroom lessons took place in Maamora Barracks; the blank firing serials had to take place some 30 minutes drive from Rabat.  The methods employed by BMATT that included a 'train the trainer' package were exactly what the RMAF required.

The RMAF selected 25 students from a broad range of experience from fairly senior Capt's, through recently graduated Officer's. They came from differing units within the Field Army. Most were motivated to perform well and a few had experience of PSO ops in Kosovo.

The team were allocated 3 Non Commissioned Officers from the RMAF language school. They gained valuable experience in translation and interpreting and alongside the BMATT instructors they also received a good insight into the British methods.

BMATT (CZ) In-Country Training Team (ICTT) Deployment - Morocco February 2010

BMATT (CZ) deployed a 2-man In Country Training Team (ICTT) to Maamora Barracks, Sale, Rabat, Morocco between 14 – 26 February 2010 to conduct a 2-week Design & Evaluation Peace Support Operations Training Course (D&E PSOTC).

The aim was to instruct, assist and advise 15 Officers between the rank of Colonel and Major from the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (RMAF) on D&E PSOTC in order to further develop the RMAF Peace Support capabilities.

The RMAF selected 15 students from a broad range of experience from fairly senior Colonels to Majors.  They came from differing units within the Field Army.  They were highly motivated and extremely keen to learn and a few had experience of PSO ops in Kosovo.

All of the students spoke very good English which greatly assisted the students in the understanding of the subject matter and the instructors in the delivery of instruction.  During week 2 of the course the students completed a project where they designed a training package for an operational Pre-Deployment for 90 men.
