Making it happen

Better services and better working practices.

Go through each Indicator and the corresponding Good Practice questions and choose the number that you think accurately reflects your organisations.

1 = Never Happens through to 5 = Happens all the time

Indicator 1 - Key targets for service improvement are established
  1. Are targets agreed jointly between employer and trade unions?
  2. Are targets regularly monitored and communicated?

    Examples of indicators are:
    - An improved service
    - A reduction in staff turnover
    - A reduction in sickness absence levels
    - A higher skilled workforce
    - Increase in employee participation
    - Higher value placed on union membership

Indicator 2 - Employers and trade accept joint responsibility for developing working practices that balance needs of service users with the needs of staff
  1. Are working practices developed that balance staff and union needs with service needs, e.g. annualised hours, career breaks?
  2. Are measurable healthy working targets jointly agreed?
Indicator 3 - Employers and trade unions recognise the contribution of employee involvement to service delivery and are committed to improved service outcomes
  1. Are bonuses, non-cash rewards and recognition schemes linked to improved service outcomes?
  2. Is participation in employee engagement programmes recognised by managers within performance reviews and as part of career development?
  3. Do managers recognise the contribution that employees make more generally to service outcomes?
Indicator 4 - Employers and trade unions encourage and provide development for employees to enhance their skills
  1. Do trade unions commit to supporting training and development of members?
  2. Is time off and support for training and development provided by employers?
