The Assessment Unit
The DTI provides programmes aimed at supporting UK industry.
Such programmes are provided on the basis of a sound
business case that sets out (amongst other things), the
justification for the investment of public funds, the aims of
the programme and the mechanisms by which the programme is to
be delivered and evaluated.
The Assessment Unit
is a multi-disciplinary team responsible for evaluating the
impacts of DTI programmes that focus on Science, Technology
and Innovation.
The resulting reports, presenting evaluation findings, are usually
published. Summaries of the published Evaluation Reports are available on this web site.
The Assessment Unit:

programme managers on the content of new programmes and
the development of appropriate performance indicators,
including those to be included in a ‘balanced
scorecard’

on appropriate programme monitoring procedures ensuring
that relevant data is collected to assist with programme
management and to aid future evaluations
|

strategic, independent evaluations of the department's Science,
Technology and Innovation programmes, assessing their
impacts and effects, and making recommendations for
future policy and programme decisions.

Evaluations
are usually undertaken after a programme has finished, when
there has been time to show whether the objectives have been
met or the desired effect on industry has occurred. Sometimes,
an earlier evaluation will be undertaken to see where there is
room for improvement while a programme is still running.
The Assessment Unit's evaluation reports are aimed at DTI
managers and programme participants and are generally made
publicly available.
