Biography
Lord Young is Minister for Postal Affairs and Employment Relations at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Previously he was Minister for Skills & Apprenticeships at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
Lord Young started his career as a Telecommunications apprentice at the Post Office, he was elected a Union Branch Officer in 1967 and went on to be elected General Secretary for the National Communications Union (NCU) in 1989. Following the NCU's merger with the Postal Workers he was initially joint General Secretary, and then Senior Deputy General Secretary of the combined Communication Workers' Union.
After joining the General Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in 1989 he went on to serve as President of the General Council of the TUC from 2001-2002. He was a Governor of the BBC from 1998-2002 and a member of the Armed Forces Pay Review Board from 2005-2008.
In 2004 he became Lord Young of Norwood Green in the London Borough of Ealing.
