COP17 Durban

Durban COP17 logoThe 17th Conference of the Parties (COP) begins on the 28th November in Durban South Africa. The conference will be an important staging post to secure a legally binding agreement that will limit global average temperature rises to below 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels. The good progress made at Cancun showed what can be achieved and we want to build on this further at Durban.

A key objective for the Summit will be to make progress on delivering the Cancun Agreements, continuing to put in place the global climate architecture (including for climate finance, adaptation, forests, technology and measuring and reporting emissions).

We also need to move forward on the issues that were not resolved in Cancun – legal form and mitigation ambition.

Every COP presents an opportunity to take the next step forward in all these areas – it’s not an all or nothing situation, each negotiation makes progress building on the last.
