China, Healthcare & The Stimulus

The health of China’s economy has, thankfully been good during a difficult period for the global economy. But what of its healthcare system? The downturn, and resulting stimulus spending, has given China a chance to accelerate reform of the sector - providing some interesting opportunities at the same time. below is an article I wrote for [...]

Stimulating (China) Events

As part of UKTI’s Fiscal Stimulus Initiative, we are putting on a series of events, with the China-Britain Business Council, to highlight opportunities in key sectors in China.
We covered Healthcare (and its RMB850 billion) on 22 September. Next up is ICT (RMB600 billion), with an event on 13 October – details of which can be [...]

Follow China? Follow Me!

Things change pretty quickly around here, a bit like the news coming out of China. So, just as this blog has had an upgrade and a new look, so the coverage of China is being expanded. Not only do we now have bloggers from the team in China, (and our minister, no less),  I have [...]

China: Stimulating Opportunities

Last time I posted, it was about “the rise of central China”, and the impact of China’s fiscal stimulus spending – about which there has been much interest of late. So, what is the stimulus all about?
The first point to make is that it is not a “RMB4 trillion stimulus plan”. At least, it is not [...]

The (Fiscally Stimulated) Rise of Central China

“The rise of central China”, “city clusters”, “fiscal stimulus” and “seeing is believing” are four key takeaways from my recent visit to China, with the China-Britain Business Council’s  mission to Hong Kong, Wuhan and Hefei.
While parts of the world (and parts of China) continue to suffer from the economic fall-out of the financial crisis, central [...]

China Buyers On A Mission

Long gone are the days when people talked about things simply being “made in China” (or even “designed in China”). More recently all the talk has been about “bought by China”…and that was the focus of the China buying mission to Europe, led by Commerce Minister Chen Deming, which finished with a US$2 billion flourish [...]

China: Stimulating Confidence

China’s Premier, Wen Jiabao, made the UK the last stop on his European visit. At a major business dinner on Sunday night, organised by the China-Britain Business Council, he outlined China’s response to the global economic crisis.
China’s fiscal stimulus package revolves around an RMB4 trillion (US$586 billion) package, with more money in the pipeline. Even [...]

My very Chinese week: GDP, RMB, a Wine Port, a Teas Port…

2009 is likely to be interesting for lots of reasons, and it is also likely to be busy, especially on the China front. For anyone interested in doing business in China, there is almost always a China event going on somewhere in the UK – corporate briefings, conferences, research presentations, and inbound delegations. Even some [...]

Beyond Beijing

In the space between the end of the Beijing Olympics and the start of China’s National Day holidays in October, I managed to fit in a market visit to China – to one of China’s emerging regional cities (a high growth part of a high growth market!).
Beijing and Shanghai and Guangzhou – the big three – are the standard [...]

New Website for New Wave Markets

Hot off the press – I got news this morning of the launch of UKTI and the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) new website on “New Wave Markets“, including the BRICs – Brazil, Russia, India and China - which are all part of UKTI’s High Growth Markets Programme.
As well as market information and news, some reports [...]
