The Postgraduate Review
The Postgraduate Review report One Step Beyond: Making the most of postgraduate education sector (PDF, 971 Kb) is now available.
The review has found that postgraduate education in the UK is a great asset, and world leading in many areas - but highlights the need to do more to ensure that our postgraduate sector remains internationally competitive.
Professor Keith Burnett, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield and an advisor on the review panel, said:
"There is much to celebrate about the performance of the postgraduate sector in recent years, but there is more we need to do to respond to national and international challenges. After considerable debate, we have produced a set of recommendations that we have all agreed will enhance and strengthen postgraduate education in the UK."
David Docherty, Chief Executive of the Council for Industry and Higher Education, also an advisor, said:
"We know that postgraduates are important drivers of innovation, entrepreneurship and growth and that many employers value postgraduate level skills. However, HEIs and businesses could do more to work together to ensure postgraduates have the business-facing skills that employers need – particularly leadership skills and work experience."
The report’s recommendations are addressed to the UK Government, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), funding bodies and other stakeholders and propose how postgraduate provision can be made more responsive to the needs of employers, and how it can prepare postgraduates to succeed in a range of careers. It also draws attention to the need for improved data about the social background of postgraduates and the benefits of postgraduate study.
The review team will provide evidence received on postgraduate funding and finance to the Independent Review of Higher Education Funding and Student Finance.
