Careers in Publishing

Publishing is a very broad industry. It covers books, journals, directories and databases, magazines and business media, newspapers and news agencies in both print and digital media. The sector has a highly qualified workforce, with nearly half holding an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification.

As a result, higher education provides a substantial entry route into the industry. In addition, there are a number of areas where specific, vocational qualifications may be required. Most companies provide on the job or in-house training with formal and informal supplementary external training. There are also a number of National Occupational Standards that are relevant to the industry.

Skillset is the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for Creative Media which comprises Publishing, TV, film, radio, interactive media, animation, computer games, facilities and photo imaging. Their aim is to support the improvements to the productivity of this sector to ensure that it remains globally competitive. They also provide impartial media careers advice for aspiring new entrants and established industry professionals, online, face to face and over the phone.
