Environmental and Product Regulation

The Environmental and Product Regulation Directorate represents UK interests in the development, domestic implementation and administration of European waste, environment and product safety legislation. We ensure business interests are properly considered in all related domestic waste policy areas.

We seek to ensure that:

  • EU Internal Market trade in a wide range of manufactured goods works effectively across Europe to promote free trade, safety, sustainability and innovation;
  • waste legislation, particularly producer responsibility regimes, deliver environmental gains at acceptable costs to business and public;
  • regulation and market surveillance of products are effective in promoting fair competition and provide high levels of protection in areas such as health and safety, consumer protectiion and the environment;
  • regulation is of uniformly high quality and of an appropriate cost-benfit ratio.

We do this by:

  • negotiating, implementing and adminstering European legislation on product safety, sustainability, producer responsibility and market surveillance in away that promotes free trade, innovation and fair competition;
  • ensuring intelligent, risk-based market surveillance and boarder controls in the UK that promote a level playing field in trade in compliant products;
  • promoting a proportionate, business-friendly approach to European regulation and market surveillance in the UK and abroad.
