UNFCCC

1992 - United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted.

1994 - Came into force
The international treaty adopted in June 1992 that commits countries to stabilise human-induced greenhouse gas emissions to levels that would prevent dangerous interference with the climate system.

CoP 3

1997 - Kyoto, Japan
Agreement was reached in Kyoto in 1997 that developed countries and countries making the transition to a market economy (Annex I countries) would commit to achieving quantified targets for decreasing their emissions of greenhouse gases. The Kyoto Protocol will only come into force if 55 countries, and parties representing at least 55% of the total carbon dioxide emissions for 1990, ratify it.

CoP 4

1998 - Buenos Aires, Argentina
This meeting led to a work plan to develop the initial agreement from Kyoto. The meeting led to the Buenos Aires Plan of Action.

CoP 6

2000 - The Hague, Netherlands
This meeting was intended to finalise a number of issues relating to the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol. However the delegates failed to reach agreement.

CoP 6 bis II or part II

2001 - Bonn, Germany
The purpose of this was to resolve issues outstanding from the Hague. It resulted in the Bonn Agreement.

2001 - Marrakech, Morocco
The Marrakech Accord is the agreements from Marrakech (several hundred pages), and the Marrakech Declaration is a statement passed from Marrakech to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD).

2002 - World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), Johannesburg
The summit is also known as Rio+10, following the original summit held in Rio in 1992 on Environment and Development issues.

2002 - New Delhi, India
This conference was very much a "working" meeting to build on the agreements at previous meetings, with progress made on inventory and reporting methodologies. In addition, the Delhi Declaration was announced, and the first report from the CDM Executive Board was received.

CoP 9

2003 - Milan, Italy
One of the main outcomes from this CoP was the rules for carbon sink projects.

CoP 10

2004 - Buenos Aires, Argentina
This will be held on 6 - 17 December 2004.
