Review
of the Assisted Areas Map
Following
the publication of new European Commission rules on regional aid
in March 1998 all Member States of the EU were required to revise
their Assisted Area maps by 1 January 2000.
The Government
therefore carried out a review of the Assisted Areas map of Great
Britain.
Careful consideration
was given to all areas in the review. The relative needs of different
areas across the whole of Great Britain were assessed in consultation
with all those who have an interest.
The Government
sent its original proposals for the new Assisted Areas to the
European Commission in July 1999. These were set out in the publication:
This document
explains how the review was conducted and gives the background
to the Government’s decisions.
The Government
has since revised its proposals. These proposed revisions are
